Greater rhea. Head of the greater rhea (Rhea americana),a South American cousin of the Emu and Ostrich. This flightless bird is found on the grassland plains of South America. It is the largest bird in the Americas reaching heights of 1.5 metres and weighing up to 26 kilograms. The rhea,which usually lives in flocks of between 20 and 30 individuals,mainly feeds on vegetation,but will also eat fruit,seeds,insects and small vertebrates.
