Eucalyptus stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a one-year-old stem of a Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) plant. The epidermis (outer layer) has a thick cuticle made up of the waterproof substance caoutchouc (latex rubber),because of this there is no periderm (cork) layer. Under the epidermis is the cortex with cavities (white circles) which produce the eucalyptus oil. The vascular cylinder (centre) can be seen consisting of (from outside inwards) a ring of phloem sieve tubes (pink and blue),a ring of cambium (red),and xylem tissue (yellow-orange).
