The inner cork cambium (phellogen) of the periderm has produced 2-3 outer layers of cork cells (red). Below this is the vascular cylinder made up of phloem,parenchyma,cambium and xylem tissues. The large amount of parenchyma in the vascular cylinder is for the storage of food substances such as starch grains. In the centre of the root is the primary proto and metaxylem tissues (red).
