Gamma radiation historical preservation. Religious wooden statuette, dating from the 17th century, being preserved by resin and gamma radiation treatment. The statuette has been badly damaged by wood-boring insects. It has been placed in an autoclave where a vacuum has been created to allow resin to fill the holes. In addition,an ionizing gamma radiation will kill the parasites and polymerize the resin. Following the treatment, the statuette will be four times heavier. Photographed in France | |
