African elephant tusks. African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are herbivores and are the largest and heaviest land animals alive today. Tusks are present in both male and female African elephants, and may reach a length of several metres in large males. They are used for fighting, digging and eating. Ivory, the outer coating of the tusks,is highly valued for use in jewellery and in medicinal remedies in some Asian cultures. Photographed in the Vumbura area of the Okavango Delta,Botswana | |
