Hominid skeleton. Skull and part of the skeleton of Australopithecus africanus,an early hominid which lived 3.3 to 2.5 million years ago. The skull was found separately from the rest of the skeleton, but later anatomical comparisons have lead some scientists to propose that they are from the same individual. The pelvis has a distinctly human-like shape and indicates a bipedal gait. The skull is STS 5,also known as Mrs Ples (although the sex is not confirmed),the rest of the skeleton is designated STS14. Both specimens were found in 1947 by Robert Broom in the Transvaal province of South Africa | |
