Herschel Space Observatory construction. The Herschel Space Observatory's cryostat being attached to the service module. The cryostat houses the instrument's detectors at a temperature of minus 271 degrees Celsius. This observatory will carry a 3.5 metre telescope making it the largest of its kind, larger than the Hubble telescope. It was built by the European Space Agency (ESA) and launched in May 2009. It will be used to study the formation of galaxies and stars, and to investigate the composition of the atmosphere of extrasolar planets and interstellar molecular clouds.
