Stonehenge,17th century artwork. This megalithic stone circle was constructed over 5000 years ago as a Druid temple,burial ground,or astronomical observatory. The alignment of the stones is believed to have been used to make astronomical predictions. This artwork was part of a survey and restoration of the site carried out by the British architect Inigo Jones (1573-1652),and published in The most notable antiquity of Great Britain,vulgarly called Stone-Heng. This artwork is from the 1725 edition
