Aphid on a leaf, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Aphids are plant-eating insects in the superfamily Aphidoidea. This aphid is on a leaf from a blackberry plant (Rubus sp.). The head of the aphid is at lower right, with its two antennae swept backwards. The six legs are clearly seen either side of the aphid's body. On its rear are two protrusions known as cornicles, used to extrude a defensive fluid. The other protrusion,at the back of the aphid's body,is the cauda.
