19th century optical trephine and spares. This device was introduced by Arthur Von Hippel in 1888. Trephines are surgical instruments with a cylindrical blade. This form of trephine was used in the application of corneal grafts. The blade is rotated by a clockwork motor mounted in the top. This enables it to cut into the cornea of the patient.
