Heart attack scars,post-mortem. Scar tissue (pale pink arc, centre and centre left) has formed to repair the damage caused by a heart attack (myocardial infarction). This is where blood supply to a portion of the heart muscle is interrupted, leading to the death of the muscle in that area. This is often fatal. In survivors, the damaged area is replaced by scar tissue, formed largely of the fibrous protein collagen. Post-mortem examinations, also known as autopsies, are carried out to identify a cause of death, and to assess the health of a dead person's organs | |
