Adults can grow to 18 centimetres in length and their skin ranges from green to brown. As a defence against predators they secrete a toxic foul-tasting substance called bufagin when threatened. Young common toads eat ants and some small flies. Adults eat invertebrates such as insects,larvae,spiders,slugs and worms,which they catch on their sticky tongues.
