Plant sex system by Linnaeus. This diagram, laying out the sexual classification of plants devised by the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778),was published in 1807 by the English botanist Robert John Thornton (1768-1837). A portrait of Linnaeus is at left. The text gives Linnaeus's name in Latin. The diagram itself is an identification key, with questions answered following a flowchart to aid identification and classification of different flowers. This, and similar work by Linnaeus, founded the modern science of taxonomy. This diagram is part of a larger work by Thornton, titled A New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Von Linnaeus (1797-1807) | |
