Lherzolite rock. Polarised light micrograph of lherzolite,an ultrabasic (low silica content) rock formed at great sub-crustal depth under very high pressures and temperatures. The dense crystalline structure is due to the rock originating from deep within the Earth. The mineral mix consists of olivine, clinopyroxenes, orthopyroxenes, garnet and other minerals. Here, the lherzolite has been subjected to additional deformation, shown by the crystal alignment and mild flattening. This image has been obtained using cross-polarised light (or 'crossed nichols') | |
