Pediment and inselberg landscape, artwork. This desert landscape has been formed by the erosion of mountain fronts. The erosion has left exposed areas of hard granite (grey) along the mountain tops. These exposed areas are called inselbergs or monadnocks. On the sides of the mountain fronts, the erosion forms gently sloping areas called pediments. Here, the pediments are heavily gullied from erosion by flowing water. The valleys between the mountain fronts are filled with sediment deposited in alluvial fans, forming desert plains. This landscape is typically found in basin-and-range landscapes | |
