Basin-and-range landscape, artwork. This desert landscape consists of alternating basins (grabens) and narrow mountain ranges. The underlying geology consists of tilted fault blocks moving past each other (red arrows). The edges of the blocks form the mountain ranges, and sand fills the basins to form deserts. Features of the basins include gullies and dry lake beds (playa lakes). This landscape is found in the Basin and Range Province,in the US states of Utah,Nevada and Arizona. To the west (left) is the edge of the Sierra Nevada mountains (granite). To the east (right) is the Colorado Plateau (horizontal sedimentary rocks) | |
