MODEL RELEASED. Prostate cancer radiotherapy surgery. Surgeons inserting radioactive sources into a patient's prostate gland. The radioactive sources are being implanted using needles inserted through a template (black square),through the perineal skin, and then guided to the prostate gland using a trans-rectal ultrasound probe. The assistant (lower left) is rotating the ultrasound probe to focus on each needle to ensure accurate placement of the radioactive sources. This implantation of radioactive sources is a procedure known as brachytherapy,a form of radiotherapy. The radiation from the radioactive sources kills the cancerous cells | |
