Hydrothermal vents, computer artwork. These type of vents are found on the seabed at faults in the tectonic plates that form the Earth's crust. Seawater comes into contact with the magma (molten rock) and the water is heated under pressure to temperatures as high as 400 degrees Celsius. Minerals precipitate out of the hot vent water as it meets the cold ocean water, and the results are 'chimneys' (stacks) that can reach large sizes. A plume of minerals and hot water rises up from the chimneys, which are thus called 'smokers' | |
