Chalkhill blue butterfly. Male chalkhill blue butterfly (Lysandra coridon) feeding on nectar from a carline thistle (Carlina vulgaris) flower. The chalkhill blue is an elegant silvery-blue butterfly that is characteristic of warm chalk and limestone hillsides. Eggs are laid during August and the fully formed caterpillars remain inside the egg until the following spring. The single brood of adults emerge during July and August and live through to September.
