Polymer encapsulated cells. Fluorescence light micrograph of living cells encapsulated within polymer droplets. These droplets are sprayed from inkjet nozzles using a technique known as 'pressure assisted spinning'. An electric field applied to the droplets causes them to form very fine threads that can be woven into bio-artificial tissues for organ transplant surgery or as 'living' bandages.
