Baby sea turtle (superfamily Chelonioidea) held in a hand. This turtle was born five days earlier. Sea turtles are large marine reptiles that spend most of their lives submerged at sea, coming to the surface to breathe. The females come to shore to lay their eggs. Large numbers of hatchlings are born, but only a few survive to adulthood, many being eaten by predators soon after hatching. Photographed on Reunion Island,in the Indian Ocean | |
