Lepidopteran reproduction research. Entomologist dissecting the abdomen of a female European corn borer moth (Ostrinia nubilalis) in order to see if she has been fertilised. Unlike most lepidopterans, which use sex pheromones to attract any compatible mate from up to 10 kilometres away, matings between European corn borers are not solely dependent on pheromones. Research has shown that these moths prefer to mate with individuals living on the same plant as them instead of mating with those living on other plants.
