Argan tree (Argania spinosa) nuts. These nuts are the source of argan oil,an oil used for its nutritional, cosmetic and medicinal properties. The nuts (green, upper right) go through several processing stages before the oil is obtained. First, the outer covering (pith) is stripped to obtain the central stone or nut (brown). This is then cracked to obtain the seeds (white, lower left),which are roasted and ground to a paste. The paste is then squeezed to extract the oil. The argan tree is endemic to south-western Morocco, and the oil is produced by traditional means by the Berber population in the region. Photographed in Morocco | |
