MODEL RELEASED. Shoulder joint re-surfacing surgery. Image 11 of 11. Close-up of surgery to replace the worn surface of the ball joint in a patient suffering from significant osteoarthritis of the shoulder. Here a mushroom-shaped prosthetic metal 'cap' (centre, silver) has been implanted on top of the ball,at the top of the arm bone (humerus). Osteoarthritis causes the surface of the joint to wear and become rough. This surgery, known as a hemiarthroplasty, provides a new, smooth surface. A pin on the underside of the cap, inserted into the top of the bone, holds the prosthesis in place. For images of the prosthetic 'cap' see C001/4576 and C001/4578 | |
