Shoulder joint re-surfacing surgery. Image 10 of 11. Close-up of the underside of the prosthetic metal 'cap' used to replace the worn surface of the ball joint in a patient suffering from significant osteoarthritis of the shoulder. Osteoarthritis causes the surface of the joint to wear and become rough. This surgery, known as a hemiarthroplasty, provides a new, smooth surface. The pin (white, centre) is inserted into the top of the bone. It is coated in a white chalk-like material to allow the bone to grow into it and fix it in place.
