Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911). Caricature of the British botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker. He was the youngest son of the botanist and professor William Jackson Hooker and became an established botanist,plant collector and traveller. He served as Assistant Surgeon and Naturalist on Ross' Antarctic expedition of 1839-43. He then travelled widely,visiting India,Palestine and the United States. He published many books on plants,and succeeded his father,Sir William Hooker,as director of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew.
