King penguins and sea lions on rocks. A tourist cruise ship is in the background. King penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) gather in colonies by the thousands in island groups in the sub-Antarctic. They are the second-largest of the penguins and can reach 95 centimetres in height. Sea lions (family Otariidae) are distinguished from other seals by the presence of external ear pinnae or flaps, long front flippers, and the ability to walk on four flippers on land.
