MODEL RELEASED. Varicose vein treatment. Patient undergoing transluminal occlusion of perforators (TRLOP) to treat varicose veins. The doctors are using an ultrasound probe (centre) to guide the insertion of a radio frequency stiletto (RFS,not seen) into the patient's vein. A local anaesthetic (centre right) is being injected into the area. Perforators are veins that join the superficial veins, close to the surface of the body,to the deep veins. The RFS heats the targeted vein by applying radio waves to its interior as it is withdrawn down the vein. This causes the vein to shrink and close (occlude). Following treatment, the vein is no longer visible and remains in the body. TRLOP is a minimally invasive technique and is carried out using only a local anaesthetic | |
