Starbirth region in Orion, infrared image. This is the Barnard 30 starbirth region. It is thought that a supernova that took place some 3 million years ago, sent shockwaves through this region of gas and dust clouds, and initiated a phase of starbirth. The colours show the presence of PAHs (polyaromatic hydrocarbons, green) and warm dust particles (red/orange). Background and foreground stars are blue. Barnard 30 is around 1300 light years from Earth,in the constellation of Orion. This image was obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) | |
