Supernova remnant and galactic nucleus,Chandra X-ray image. This image shows two X-ray sources (purple). At upper right is the supernova remnant SN 2006gy. At lower left is the galactic nucleus of NGC 1260,the galaxy where the supernova took place. A supernova is the explosive death of a massive star. This supernova is thought to be one of the brightest and most energetic ever observed. Both objects are about 238 million light years from Earth,in the constellation of Perseus. This observation was made with the space-based Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). Image published in 2007 | |
