Great Salt Lake,Utah,USA,as seen from the International Space Station (ISS). This is the largest salt lake in the western hemisphere, measuring some 120 by 40 kilometres. The white areas on the shoreline show areas affected by drought and areas where evaporation has left salt and other mineral deposits. The rectangular areas (red and white,at centre left and lower centre) are where solar evaporation ponds have been constructed to mine the salt.
