The Curonian Spit is an elongated sand dune peninsula on the Baltic Sea coast,shared between Lithuania (right) and the Russian enclave of Kalingrad (bottom). It is 98 kilometres long and 0.4 to 4 kilometres wide. Humans have inhabited it since prehistoric times,and it is the efforts of humans that have preserved it from erosion by wind and waves. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
