Retinal implant. Computer artwork of a biomedical chip (square, centre right) implanted just under the surface of the retina in a human eye. The retina is a light sensitive area inside the inner layer at the back of the eye. In a healthy eye it receives visual stimuli and transmits them to the optic nerve (centre right). Retinal implants are being developed so that they may one day be able to provide a usable form of sight to people suffering from degenerative retinal diseases. The chips are designed to receive signals from an external digital camera and transmit them as if they were coming from the eye itself | |
