George Porter (1920-2002),British chemist,in the library of the Royal Society with the original Fellows book and a bust of Michael Faraday. Porter was awarded a share of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1967 for his work developing flash photolysis in 1949. This technique,used to investigate short-lived chemicals such as free radicals,is now used widely in many different areas of science. Porter was knighted in 1972,served as President of the Royal Society from 1985 to 1990,and was made Baron Porter of Luddenham in 1990. Photographed in 1989 | |
