Female mayfly. This mayfly (order Ephemeroptera) is in its first stage, the subimago,of two flying stages. It has emerged from its nymphal stage in the river and flown to nearby vegetation for shelter until the final moult to an imago (spinner). The dull appearance is due to the final skin, which is yet to be shed. It even covers the wings, giving them a papery appearance. The female has smaller eyes and shorter front legs than the male mayfly (see image C001/0458) | |
