Winter aconite in UV light. Coloured photograph of winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) showing the pattern of reflected (red, yellow) and absorbed (dark) ultraviolet (UV) light. The bull's-eye UV pattern is known as a 'nectar guide' and helps to attract pollinating insects, which can see UV light. Humans are unable to see these patterns. This image was taken using a digital camera adapted to filter and detect UV light. The resulting monochrome image was coloured on a computer. UV light is outside the visible spectrum and does not have a true colour. See image B808/1421 for daylight version. Winter aconite is poisonous, containing the toxic chemical aconitine | |
