False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a seed of the snapdragon,Antirrhinum majus. Small seeds like this one often have very roughly textured seed coats,or testas. The ridges & craters are produced by outgrowths of the integument,or outer skin,of the ovule (egg). Their purpose is to trap small particles of soil,so that when the seed falls to the ground it is anchored & can germinate in security without being blown away. The testa is mechanically protective & limits entry of solutes into the seed. Magnification: x40 at 6x4.5cm size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS,figure 4.40,page 86 | |
