The seed head of a species of crane's-bill,Geranium robertianum,a meadowland wild flower, showing the plant's unusual seed dispersal mechanism. The cup-like pods which contain the seeds are joined to the top of the main "trunk" by supple,spring-like stems. When the seeds are ripe, the stems suddenly curl upwards, catapulting the seeds out of the pods and away from the parent plant. The two pods at the top of the image have already catapulted away their cargo of seeds. A full pod is just visible within the sepals at the bottom of the photograph | |
