Light micrograph of germinating pollen grains of the Willow herb,Epilobium. At centre right,a cluster of pollen grains have come to rest on the stigma (lower left) of the flower. Each grain has three wing-like structures which assist in its dispersal by the wind. Some of this pollen is germinating. A tube, seen at above right,is growing out of a pollen grain which will penetrate the stigma. This pollen tube will grow down to the female ovary, and there fertilize an ovule with the male nuclei contained in the pollen grain. In this way an Epilobium seed is formed. Magnification: unknown. Given magnification: x80 at 35mm size, but this is inconsistent with B786/388 given as x180 | |
