Light micrograph of pollen grains from a species of willow herb,Epilobium angustifolium. This species exhibits a trait known as dichogamy wherein the anthers and stigmas (the male and female reproductive organs) mature at different times. In this case the pollen is released from the anthers before the stigma of the same flower is receptive. This technique, called protandry, reduces the chances of self-pollination,a method of fertilization which leads to inbreeding and subsequent reduction of genetic variability.
