False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the flower of common chickweed,Stellaria media,a self- pollinating plant found on uncultivated ground in Europe. In the background are the five sepals or calyx (green),which serve a protective function. Next are the 5 notched petals or corolla (yellow),which attract insects by their bright colour. Calyx & corolla together form the perianth. Three stamens topped by pollen-bearing anthers (male organs) lie between the petals & the capsule. At centre are the tufts of the stigmas (female organs) supported on stalks called styles. These connect the pollen-receiving stigmas with the ovary. Magnification: x5 at 6x4.5cm size | |
