Daisy. Close-up of the "flower" of a shasta daisy (Chrysanthemum maximum),a popular garden plant with large,daisy-like flowers. This flower is actually a cluster of tiny individual flowers,or florets. The white "petals" are sterile ray florets. The yellow florets are fertile, those in the outer ring maturing earliest to expose pollen- bearing anthers to insects. The yellow florets are arranged in two sets of interlocking spirals: 21 clockwise and 34 anticlockwise. The numbers 21 & 34 are adjacent in the Fibonacci series of numbers (1,2,3,5,8...),where summing adjacent numbers gives the next in the series. Fibonacci spirals are also seen in pine cones and pineapple bumps |
