Spiral tendril of the Kedostris africana plant. At centre,a green tendril has curled its way up the thread of a spider's web. This thread, being of insufficient anchorage (part of it seen at top),caused the tendril to continue spiralling in its attempt to grasp at "nothing". Tendrils are modified leaves or stems used to grip nearby objects for support. The motion of tendrils is caused by differential growth rates in the cells; those closest to the point of touch shorten slightly, whereas on the opposite side the cells lengthen. Eventually,a terminal hook was estab- lished onto the silken thread. Kedostris africana is a caudiform succulent from Southern Africa | |
