Mistletoe vascular bundle. Light micrograph (LM) of a section of mistletoe (Viscum album) stem in cross-section,showing a vascular bundle. The vascular bundle is one of nine that radiate out from the centre of the stem (at bottom left). Each is composed of long fibres (dark crimson),phloem (green) and xylem (pink). The long fibres (sclerenchyma) give the stem support and allow flexibility. In-between,the phloem transports food and the xylem transports water and minerals. The green tissue (parenchyma) around the vascular bundles is for food storage and, when swollen with water, provides extra support. The whole stem cross-section is seen in B725/384 | |
