False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a vertical section through balsa wood,the wood (secondary xylem) of the tree Ochroma lagopus. Each of these air-filled chambers is a dried-out cell. The vertically elongated cells are fibres; strong sclerenchyma cells with thickened walls which support and strengthen the tree. The horizontal structures are part of the tree's ray system and are responsible for the lateral transport of photosynthates. Magnification: x17 at 35mm size
