Root formation. Macrophotograph of spontaneous root formation on a woody stem of a butterfly bush,or buddleia (Buddleja davidii). Root growth such as this occurs when the plant has been cut,in this case, from a cutting taken for replanting. Growth hormones from the growing shoots travel down the stem, and start new roots growing at the cut end. Some plants, such as this one, form roots even away from the cut end due to the powerful nature of their hormones. Synthetic plant hormones (rooting powders) are also available, which induce the rooting reaction and can facilitate the growth of new plants from cuttings | |
