Lavender. A field of lavender,Lavandula spica. The name comes from the Latin for wash (lavare),referring to the plant's use in toilet preparations. It flowers between midsummer and early autumn, and it is harvested just before the flowers are fully open. It is a favourite plant of bees. Lavender has antitussive and antispasmodic properties. The essential oil obtained from the flowers is an excellent antiseptic and insecticide, and is reputed to neutralise a viper's venom. Photographed in Provence,France | |
