Aphid in sundew. Macrophotograph of a rose aphid (Macrosiphon rosae) trapped in the sticky hairs of a cape sundew (Drosera capensis). The sundew is an insectivorous plant which has flowering heads covered in sticky tentacles (red). These are modified glandular hairs. The smell of the plant attracts an insect, which lands on the hairs and becomes stuck. The plant then wraps around the insect and releases digestive enzymes to obtain nutrients, particularly nitrogen, from its body. The sundew does this to allow it to live in areas with low-nutrient soils. It generally inhabits bogs and marshland. Magnification: x3.3 at 35mm size | |
