Wild lilac-coloured cornflowers and poppies among a cereal crop. The cornflower,Centaurea cyanus,is of eastern Mediterranean origin which has lived in close association with human agriculture since the neolithic era. Its seeds have been dispersed worldwide with the transport of cereals. Yet despite this long association with humans, the cornflower is gradually disappearing through the use of agricultural herbicides. Outside of its natural habitat,Centaurea cyanus is fragile. This historical plant of which Leonardo da Vinci once remarked upon its very pure colour,is rapidly dwindling in numbers | |
