Orchid flower (Myrmecophila brysiana). Most of the petals and sepals have a striking twisted shape, but one petal (the lower one, called the lip) is an elaborate curved shape and also has a different colour (yellow). This attracts pollinators to the flower. Parts of other flowers are also seen. The Myrmecophila orchids have a symbiotic relationship with ants that protect them from insect predators. This orchid is found in lowland tropical Central America. This specimen is from Guatemala. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers | |
